About Us
About Us
Who Are We?
We are a group of passionate individuals committed to celebrating, advocating and sharing Singapore’s rich maritime heritage. Guided by a kampong spirit of mutual trust and active participation, we take meaningful action to strengthen our maritime culture, enrich our community, and inspire the next generation to appreciate and carry forward our shared maritime legacy.
Our Origins
In the mid-2010s, a few of us with maritime backgrounds observed that Singapore’s sea heritage could be shared more alongside with mainstream heritage talks, which to us, relates to activities on land. We started an informal interest group with the simple idea of building genuine public awareness through everyday layman language and compact engaging sessions that anyone can join.
Our Mission
To bring Singapore’s maritime heritage to life, connecting our shared past to inform our present and inspire future generations.
Our Vision
A Singapore where our rich maritime heritage is widely understood, proudly celebrated, and continuously passed on to future generations as an integral part of our shared identity.
How Are We Doing It?
We bring this mission to life through four inclusive ways: strong Core Learning, curiosity-led Self-Learning, informal peer-to-peer Kopi Shop Learning, and hands-on Experiential Learning.
FAQs
How can I support SMHIG?
You can support us through partnerships, sponsorships, or by volunteering your time and skills. Every contribution helps fund our educational programs, heritage preservation projects, and community outreach. We welcome support from individuals, community groups, and corporate partners who share our passion for preserving Singapore’s rich maritime history.
How do I become a volunteer or member?
Volunteering with us is the best way to get involved and see if our values align. We don’t have formal, paid memberships or rigid structures. Instead, we embrace the true kampong spirit—where community is built on shared passion, mutual trust, and stepping up to lend a hand.
Whether you help plan activities, manage events, hunt for sponsored event venues, secure sponsorships, shoot photos or videos, run social media, write stories, assist on the ground—or bring a unique skill we haven't even thought of—every effort counts. It is through doing things together that we discover if there’s a natural chemistry to become an "SMHIG Kaki Kampong." Reach out through our website or connect with an SMHIG kaki to kickstart the journey!
What activities does the group organize?
We organize educational talks, guided site visits, heritage advisory services, preservation initiatives, and community outreach programs. All our activities aim to raise awareness, foster appreciation, and safeguard Singapore’s maritime history. Check our website regularly or follow our updates to join our upcoming events!
